'O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand'

Isaiah 64:8

Design and Technology Intent

At Holy Family our Design and Technology curriculum provides our children with the opportunities to

  • Be innovative and creative thinkers who have an appreciation for the product design cycle through ideation, creation and evaluation.
  • Be imaginative, creative, practical subject aimed to develop and enhance skills that can be applied to real life situations
  • Think creatively both as individuals and members of a team.
  • To evaluate their own and others work through past and present technology

Design and Technology Implementation

The teaching of Design and Technology at Holy Family has been adapted from the ‘Kapow’ and covers all aspects of the National Curriculum aims: design, make and evaluate.  There are four main strands that run throughout our DT curriculum: Design, Make, Evaluate, and Technical Knowledge which has been broken down into six key areas which are revisited throughout the year: Cooking and Nutrition, Mechanisms/Mechanical Systems, Structures, Textiles, Electrical Systems (KS2) and Digital world (KS2)

Through the carefully designed scheme of work, key skills are revisited again and again becoming increasingly specific and in depth, ensuring learning is being built upon and allowing pupils to revise and build on their previous learning.

At Holy Family, we have mixed aged classes and therefore follow a 2-year rolling cycle with clearly defined end points. These show that by the end of KS1 all children will have been taught all objectives for year 1 and 2, by the end of year 4 all children will have been taught all objectives for year 3 and 4 and by the end of year 6 all children will have been taught all objectives for year 5 and 6.
Ongoing assessments take place throughout the year, progress is tracked and recorded at the end of every unit and this information is used to inform future lessons; ensuring children are supported and challenged appropriately.

Design and Technology Impact

At Holy Family we develop designers that have:

  • Understand the functional and aesthetic properties of a range of materials and resources.
  • A thorough knowledge of which tools, equipment and materials to use to make their products.
  • Understand and apply the principles of healthy eating, diets, and recipes, including key processes, food groups and cooking equipment.
  • Have an appreciation for key individuals, inventions and events in history and of today that impact our world.
  • The ability to use time efficiently and work constructively and productively with others.
  • The ability to carry out thorough research, show initiative and ask questions to develop an exceptionally detailed knowledge of users’ needs.
  • The ability to act as responsible designers and makers, working ethically, using finite materials carefully and working safely.
